Summer Language Fellowships

So that our students receive the very best academic experience of Irish as a living language, the Keough-Naughton Institute offers opportunities for summer language study in Ireland in established immersion programs.   With the help of an anonymous Ireland Council donor and cost-sharing arrangement with Notre Dame's Center for the Study of Languages and Cultures, students can receive travel, tuition and expenses to live in Ireland while honing their Irish language skills.

In 2012, under the leadership of Chairperson and Professor Peter McQuillan, the Department of Irish Language and Literature established a new Major in Irish Language and Literature at Notre Dame, the first of its kind outside of Ireland. Given the difficulty of the language and the absolute need for exposure to native Irish speakers, the Institute sees the opportunity for intensive immersion work as absolutely central to any major course of study worth its academic weight.
