The participation of thousands of Irish volunteers in the Spanish American wars of independence is commonly celebrated as a major landmark in the development of ties between the peoples of Ireland and the Hispanic New World.The alluring narratives associated with certain ‘heroes’ of Irish birth or stock, however, have also obscured the multifaceted meanings and uses that their contemporaries in Ireland and amongst the Irish-exiled community in the United States gave to these events. This talk will suggest why exploring Irish perceptions of imperialism, revolution and modernity beyond the Anglophone context might enrich our understanding of the transnational Irish experience during the Age of Revolutions.
