This semester, the Clingen Family Center for the Study of Modern Ireland launches a new series of moderated events entitled “Conversations in the Humanities, Culture, and Policy.” Intended to contribute to the debates, questions, and issues of the present day, these regular conversations focus on topics of interest to contemporary Ireland.
Our third conversation examines the contours of the Irish language landscape in today’s increasingly diverse and globalized Ireland. Through conversation with expert panelists in the academic and public spheres, we will explore the mutual relationships between migration and language and the ways in which Irishness is both shaped by and shapes the experience of Irish speakers.
Ola Majekodunmi is a freelance journalist, writer, filmmaker, and broadcaster, who produced her first video-documentary, "What Does 'Irishness' Look Like?" in 2018.
Úna-Minh Kavanagh is a travel writer, journalist, and content creator, whose first book, a memoir called Anseo, was published by New Island in 2019.
Dr. Fangzhe Qiu is Lecturer/Assistant Professor of Early Irish at the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, and Folklore at University College Dublin. His most recent volume, Morphosyntactic Variation in Medieval Celtic Languages, was published by De Gruyter in 2020.
