Ciaran O'Neill is the Ussher Assistant Professor in Nineteenth Century History at Trinity College Dublin and the Patrick B. O'Donnell Visiting Professor at the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies for the Spring 2019 term.

He will will discuss the significance of the anthropometric tests carried out on Irish subjects in the 1890s and 1930s. The research was conducted by two separate research teams at Trinity College Dublin and Harvard University under the supervision of some of the leading names in ethnography and physical anthropology.  What did these scientists intend?  What was the relevance of their work then. . .and now?
