Susan McKay is an author, commentator, and journalist from Derry in Northern Ireland. Her new book, Northern Protestants: On Shifting Ground, published in May 2021 by Blackstaff Press, has been critically acclaimed and is a best seller on both sides of the Irish Border. The Irish Times said it was written with “deep emotional intelligence” and was “vital reading in every sense."
Ms. McKay's journalism appears in the New York Times, The London Review of Books, The Guardian and The Irish Times. She is currently writing a book about borders, for which she received an Arts Council NI major individual award.
Her other books include Bear In Mind These Dead (Faber, 2007), a history of the conflict in Northern Ireland told through the stories of those bereaved, and Northern Protestants: An Unsettled People (Blackstaff Press, 2005).
Ms. McKay's talk will cap a week at the Keough-Naughton Institute as a short-term fellow. She will visit classes, research, and become better acquainted with the Institute and the faculty and students associated with it.
At Friday's event, Mr. Kevin Byrne, Ireland's Consul General, Chicago, will introduce Ms. McKay before her discussion with Colin Barr, Reader, University of Aberdeen, and the Institute's Herbert Allen and Donald R. Keough Visiting Faculty Fellow for the 2021-2022 academic year.
