Writing Peace: 30 Years of the Joint Declaration

On December 6, an event marking the 30th anniversary of the Joint (or Downing Street) Declaration, "Writing Peace: Drafting the Joint Declaration, 1993-2023," will take place at the Royal Irish Academy. The event is part of a collaboration between ARINS (Analysing and Researching Ireland North and South), a joint project of the Keough-Naughton Institute and the Royal Irish Academy, and Quill, a digital humanities project based at Pembroke College, University of Oxford.

Speakers will include:

  • Seán Ó hUiginn, head of the Anglo-Irish Division of the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs from 1991 to 97 and Irish ambassador to the United States between 1997 and 2011;
  • Professor Katy Hayward, professor of Political Sociology in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University Belfast
  • Professor Ian McBride, Foster Professor of Irish History, Hertford College, Oxford;
  • Sir Jonathan Stephens, former Permanent Secretary at the Northern Ireland Office
