PARISH: Preserving and Recording Ireland’s Sacred Heritage

PARISH — Preserving and Recording Ireland’s Sacred Heritage — is a collaborative history and heritage project of Maynooth University and the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies in the University of Notre Dame’s Keough School of Global Affairs.

The project is producing a comprehensive online database with photographs and other data records of the interiors of the more than 3,000 Catholic churches on the island of Ireland. These churches, mostly built in the 19th and 20th centuries, stand as embodiments of community history with a wealth of architectural, cultural, and social heritage.

PARISH’s database, which will be freely accessible to anyone for research, will provide a vital ongoing record of the Irish Catholic Church’s infrastructure and the people who built it.
