Enrico Terrinoni

Enrico Terrinoni holds a Ph.D. in Anglo-Irish Literature and Drama from University College Dublin. He is Professor in residence at the Italian National Academy “Lincei” and Chair of English Literature at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia. He translated many Irish authors such as Brendan Behan, James Stephens, Oscar Wilde, Michael D. Higgins, GB Shaw and James Joyce. He also translated works by Francis Bacon, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Lee Masters, Muriel Spark, Alasdair Gray and George Orwell. For his translations he won several prizes: the City of Naples Award for Italian Language and Culture in 2012, the Annibal Caro Prize in 2017, The City of Florence – Von Rezzori Prize in 2019, The Capalbio International Prize. He was Visiting Fellow at the Keough-Naughton Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Notre Dame in 2019, Mendel Fellow at University of Indiana in 2008, Visiting Scholar at Marsh’s Library in 2011, Government of Ireland Scholar at UCD between 2001 and 2003, and Visiting Professor at the National Taiwan Normal University in 2022. His biographical study of Joyce’s time in Rome won the Francesco De Sanctis Prize and the Viareggio-Repaci Prize. His latest work is a biographical study of Joyce’s friendship with writer Italo Svevo. He co-edited, with Declan Kiberd and Catherine Wilsdon, The Book about Everything (2022). Between 2017 and 2019 he published the annotated Italian translation of books III and IV of Joyce’s Finnegans Wake done in collaboration with Fabio Pedone, and in 2021 he published the first ever bilingual critical edition of Joyce’s Ulysses. He founded and co-edited the Internationalist Review of Irish Culture. He is currently working on a book on quantum physics and literary criticism. He is the President of the James Joyce Italian Foundation.
