The Legacy Project: The Archive of the Colombian Truth Commission at the University of Notre Dame

Award Description

The Clingen Family Center for the Study of Modern Ireland is pleased to offer a short-term, residential research grant of $5,000 to support use of the Legacy Project archive maintained by the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies in collaboration with the Lucy Family Institute for Data and Society, with support from the Humanity United Foundation. One award will be available per academic year, and is intended to support the cost of travel and accommodation for a short visit to the University of Notre Dame. Timing and duration are open to negotiation during the academic year in which the grant is awarded, and will be subject to approval.

Recipients will benefit from the opportunity to engage with leading scholars at the University of Notre Dame and will also have access to the Hesburgh Library resources. Recipients are expected to participate actively in the intellectual life of the Clingen Center, and will have the opportunity to present their research in a public event.

Eligibility

Applications are open to scholars who are either 1) based in the UK or Ireland and interested in utilizing the transmedia files of the Colombian Truth Commission to support research in peace studies, transitional justice, trauma, conflict, or similar research agendas, or 2) based anywhere in the world and interested in using the archive for research relating specifically to the topic of Ireland and Colombia. 

The Legacy Project particularly seeks scholars who will actively align their research with ongoing Legacy research initiatives.

Applicants must have a track record of scholarship in their respective fields, and preferably hold a master's or doctoral degree. Scholar-practitioners with equivalent qualifications, as well as advanced graduate students, are also welcome to apply.

Applicants should also consider the short-term research grants offered by our partners in the Kellogg and Kroc Institutes, available for both internal and external researchers.

Application

A complete application consists of the following materials, collated into one PDF document emailed to clingen@nd.edu. This document must contain all of the following and should be organized in this order:

• Cover letter outlining research background and details of proposed visit (not to exceed two single-spaced pages)
• Current Curriculum Vitae (not to exceed three pages)
• Research project proposal including specific role of Legacy Project materials and any anticipated outputs (not to exceed two single-spaced pages)
• Research Project Abstract (up to 300 words)
• Names and contact information for two references, with the expectation that references will only be checked for finalists.

NB: English language proficiency encouraged for engaging in the intellectual life of the Notre Dame community and presenting research in a public forum. Valid passport and acquisition of any necessary visas will be the responsibility of the applicant/grantee.

Deadline

The deadline for submitting a completed application for the 2023-24 academic year is June 1, 2023.
